Building & Renovation

Welcome to our new section creatively named (hey, form must follow function) and just waiting for your input. Many of us are Modernist homeowners or seekers and we’ve noticed a distinct lack of information about renovation and building these properties we love. The long term view here is build up an easy resource about services and materials out there, sharing information and promoting the viability of Mid-Century Australian Architecture as we go. Remember, this isn’t a forum to start whinging about your builder, but rather the place to find the supplier of casement latches, a sympathetic architect or maybe post an eBay link to some mind-blowing dead-stock tiles, perfect for a 60s bathroom revival. Our current IT set up isn’t made for message board style posts just yet. So we’ll begin with some initial chitchat and take it from there. Drop us an email (or write a comment here) if there is a particular subject you need some input on, and well make it a topic for discussion.

For those of you who love decorative screen block walls, they can still be made to order from Besser in DeeWhy in Sydney. I received this info from a very reliable source.

The picture of a fireplace for the ‘profiles’ link is really cool. What do you call that stone masonry kind of stuff on the fireplace? Because I’m interested in doing something similar for my mantle piece.

How wonderful to finally find a website in this country dedicated to such great style! Our current house is an extremely basic 1962 fibro and unfortunately the time has come to replace it (no insulation, needs rewiring, not really big enough, etc.). Finding an architect or building form in the Illawarra that builds along midcentury lines is proving very difficult though. We’re looking at starting next year and any links that could help us out would be very much appreciated.
