Many of you are Mid-Century homeowners with a burning desire to add on to your houses in a sympathetic manner or, in some cases, bring an abused gem back from the structural brink but we’ve noticed a distinct lack of information anywhere about the renovation and building these particular properties we love. So we’ve decided to set up an easy resource about services and materials out there, sharing information and promoting the viability of Mid-Century Australian Architecture and interiors as we go.
Feel free to post a question or make a comment about your particular project. Remember this isn’t a forum to whinge about your builder, but rather an information hive to help out your fellow Modernist Australians.
Soon we’ll also be adding a ‘Reader’s Homes’ section that you may show up the fruit of your labours.
Below is a list of articles we’ll be adding to, highlighting certain building materials or aspects of Mid-century renovation.
Also see the Trade Rolodex. A place to find a sympathetic builder, architect or designer who may be able to help you on your particular building quest.

For those of you who love decorative screen block walls, they can still be made to order from Besser in DeeWhy in Sydney. I received this info from a very reliable source.
The picture of a fireplace for the ‘profiles’ link is really cool. What do you call that stone masonry kind of stuff on the fireplace? Because I’m interested in doing something similar for my mantle piece.
How wonderful to finally find a website in this country dedicated to such great style! Our current house is an extremely basic 1962 fibro and unfortunately the time has come to replace it (no insulation, needs rewiring, not really big enough, etc.). Finding an architect or building form in the Illawarra that builds along midcentury lines is proving very difficult though. We’re looking at starting next year and any links that could help us out would be very much appreciated.
Appologies for going a bit off the topic but can anybody suggest a good kitchen firm in the U.K.
Just wondering if anyone has images, suppliers and Builders names and ideas for Architects for a restoration project here in Brisbane. We’re working on our late 50′s early 60′s home and are about to start our carport and fences. We’re looking for likeminded folk who will “get” the idea of restoration not renovation or detonation….Links or info would be much appreciated – TA!!
I too am looking for an architect to work on renovations of my 1950′s ‘beach house’ in Coburg in Melbourne. Any ideas?
Lucylu my interior architecture firm specialises in mid century modern renovations in Melbourne. We are currently working on 2 classic houses from the 1960s – one in Mt Eliza that is a Palm Springs style and one in Caulfield South that is an International Style. Both involve an extension and remodeling of the existing, and in both cases the brief is to maintain the integrity of the stye, while bringing them up to date with current lifestyles.
Hi Karie
I’m a Brisbane architect from a small firm called Cloud Dwellers. In addition to the cutting edge stuff we do, we also are very passionate about mid-century design and have had past experience in renovating and adding to them. Our own house is a great one from 1960 located in Aspley, which not a lot of Brisbanites know has got a heap of great sixties house. You can get our contact details from our web site which is http://www.cloud-dwellers.com.au We would really enjoy hearing from you.

The exposed 5m high timber posts supporting the 2m wide eaves entirely surrounding our Melbourne suburbs Modernist home are suffering for their years.
Does anyone have any any contacts who know how to approach such a job without getting into demolition mode??
Hi there,
Does anyone know of a place I can buy a modernist (or at the very least modern) looking cubby house?
Alternatively would be wrapped to find someone to build one, I have a design concept (simply and clean). Eager before Christmas of course!
Any suggestions, contacts would be super!
