Architecture on the radio waves.

For those not aware – the magnificent community radio station (and a backbone of the creative tribes of Victoria) 3RRR has a dandy little show right up our alley called The Architects which has been running for several years. Hosted by architects/lecturers/writers Stuart Harrison, Christin Phillips and Simon Knott it’s a good one to tune on while getting dinner together of a Tuesday evening, keeping you abreast of local, national and international design news, projects and events, without the stuffy discourse.

Last night’s show for example, included a run down of the latest list of buildings in Melbourne nominated for Heritage Protection by the National Trust. Something we at MA are particularly interested in, considering the look-in many Modernist Australian buildings are finally getting this time round (much to the disgust of the knock ‘em down, throw ‘em up, off-the-plan, anti-design Profit Barons).

Check them out live every Tuesday 7-8pm or anytime you want via podcast.

Location, location, location

A request received in the past week from a location scout in Sydney, looking for that perfect Mid-Century foyer around town…

“It is meant to be a function centre but could be an office building with a grand entrance. The brief is ‘modernist’ in feel…”

Let us know Sydneysiders if any of your little-known favourites spring to mind, pass them on and maybe you’ll see them down the track on the big (or small) screen in all their Modernist glory!

Butter Yellow Butterfly

A new home has popped up and spread it’s delicate wings this week.

Back in the Atomic age, when the world was forging new frontiers, the old was so over that creative minds literally inverted the traditional home profile to ring in a dynamic change in expression and a new design for living, thus the butterfly roofline born. Relatively scarce in Australian housing stock, we are happy to put forward this original home for you consideration. Complete with sunny yellow paintwork and lush Queensland garden, this butterfly roofed home needs some work to bring it back to the future, but the rewards will be great.

Back to school – Preshil Open Day.

Posted by MA on May 22, 2011  |   No Comments »

Former students, present parents and architect fans alike have all let us know of an upcoming open day at the progressive school, Preshil where much reverence shall be paid to at junior school, Arlington. This primary school campus, planned in the mid sixties by leading Mid-Century architect Kevin Borland, remains to this day at the forefront of visionary education-specific design and judging from the emails we have received in the past month, continue as a much-loved fixture in this school community’s collective experience.

“In 1972, Borland was awarded the RAIA Victorian chapter Bronze medal for the school campus, which encompassed six buildings designed between 1962 and 1972, including the octagonal school hall and various classrooms such as the elevated ‘Long Room’ building with a tree growing through the timber deck, and the multi- level and cellular-planned ‘Home Rooms’

Hannah Lewi,  Australian Design Review, 5th May 2011

This Sunday, June 5th, sees the school gates open as a fundraiser for conserving these important buildings and grounds, including a focus on the architecture of learning spaces with guest speakers and historical photo display. In the words of architecture student and Preshill parent Nic Dowse;
“The school would have to have the best collection of this style of woody modernism in the country.
Peter McIntyre and John Kenny, together with education and design specialists Mary Featherston and Ben Cleveland, will be speaking on the relationship between designed spaces and learning – all of Borland’s old ideas are new again.”

MA hopes to be in attendance and would like to see you all there too.
For more details see the school website and also the recent DOCOMOMO article on Borland’s work at Preshil.

Beau seeks new lover – update!

Great news received over the weekend, our plea for a fellow Modernist Australian to purchase and save a particularly lovely Mid-Century home in Beaumaris has been heard! It is with happy hearts we were informed that this home now has …..

“… two lovers not one. My partner and I are passionate about mid-century design, housing, interiors and furniture… so this humble abode in need of some love and care is about to get just that.”

These new owners are now seeking the services of  “..a like-minded architect that can help us shortlist our millions of ideas and bring our dreams to life.”
So anyone out there with a name or the skills to help our new heroes, drop us a line.

Love your work Annie and partner.

Real Estate Agents: sell by design, aim to destroy.

Posted by MA on May 10, 2011  |   5 Comments »

Confusing times for real estate agents we know. Clearance rates are plummeting, up is down, down is up but sometimes the level of agent befuddlement with regard to their own property qualities astounds even us hardened property vultures. So it was with seething stomachs we read this recent opening pitch for this stunningly designed and mint condition Modernist home in Melbourne’s golden suburb of Toorak…

“Superbly situated with a north-facing orientation in a prized cul-de-sac walking distance to Toorak Village, this stylishly refurbished c1967 residence designed by Ake Jodell represents an exciting opportunity to rebuild or develop (STCA).”

So it seems they are selling this place based on it’s suburb Modernist design attributes and architect pedigree only to ensure it’s disfigurement or demolition? As the kids like to say – WTF?!

As a short activity, let’s see how this kind of sales spiel would transfer with other works of vision and creativity, for example at Southeby’s Auction House;

“Superbly crafted with subtle blue glaze and gold trim, this c.1830 Qing Dynasty vase represents an exciting opportunity to smash it with a hammer and use the pieces for your next mosaic project.”

Or maybe a high end fashion sell-off;

“Superbly crafted with a hand woven Italian silk, this stylishly hemmed c.1967 dress, designed by Yves Saint Laurent represents an exciting opportunity to rip it apart at the seams and sew yourself a nice deb frock.

How about Christies?

“Superbly painted with a true master’s hand, this dramatic c.1967 artwork of angels in the Australian bush, by Arthur Boyd represents an exciting opportunity to tear it out and use the frame for something else.

Or Shannon’s Prestige Motor Auctions;

“Superbly built with classic English detailing, this stylishly refurbished c.1950 ‘Silver Dawn’ Rolls Royce represents an exciting opportunity to dismantle it part by part for use in your other car.”

You catchin’ the drift yet, you Real Estate dolts!

May listings roundup

On the market this week is one fantastic 1950’s home in a snazzy pocket of Hobart.  Busting with the promise of full restoration as a Mid-Century wonderland with a north facing aspect, a killer view and large gardens but as always at precarious risk of redevelopment. Apple Isle MA readers get on it! Because at the present Mid-Century homes in Tasmania are the devil, but eventually may become the tiger.

In Victoria we see some glorious Mid-Cenutry Modernist architecture in the guise of a magnificent Jodell designed home in Toorak (also see our post ‘Real Estate Agents: sell by design, aim to destroy’) and an intriguing home in Ballarat, seemingly all original and raring to go set on a classic bush block to boot.

We’d also like to thank regular MA reader Neal for passing through a collection of new places in WA and note we’ve added some new coastal rippers in Mollymook NSW and Mermaid Beach QLD check em!

Designs for Warrandyte

One last minute notice for next weekend Melbourne MA readers – the Robin Boyd Foundation will be running a self-guided house tour of six homes in Warrandyte. Five designed by Robin Boyd and one by his father Penleigh Boyd, each for clients of various creative backgrounds and with a view for bushfire resistant design, including the King House (1951).

For more info and to book see the programs page over at the Robin Boyd Foundation.

April updates

Lately we were contacted by MA reader Simone with some interesting news; as a seller of one particular property currently in our listings (5/27 Hill St Hawthorn), she has revealed it is on the market because she just bought another house in Ringwood also first sighted on MA’s Victorian Real Estate Listings. What a nice little cycle of appreciation and preservation we’ve got going now hey?

Speaking of Melbourne, it is always gratifying to see our local Mid-Century architecture getting the kudos it deserves in the mass media. So it was with glee we opened The Age glossy ad mag this morning and saw a strong (how about 50%?) representation of Modernist Mid-Century architecture in the Melbourne’s top 10 buildings straw poll (and none in the 10 worst BTW) with Walsh St (1958) voted number one (and a little woo! to fellow Modernist Australians and commentators, Nest Architects). Also sighted were Heide II (1968), The National Gallery (1968), Orica House (1958) and The former BHP House (1972). If only the Southern Cross Hotel was still standing *sigh*.

Modern Times are upon us

We would like to give a shout out to a new friend and retail purveyor, Modern Times. New kid on the block of Mid-Century and local designer furniture with their soon to spring pop-up shop (kids these days and their short retail spans huh!), they have a rather nice blog going too. Check it all out here.
