Another day, another stunner from the wide streets of Caulfield. Time to tick some boxes: Single owner for the last 50 + years? Check. Original condition complete with furniture to testify to it’s true Modernist cred? Check. Fabulous detail including stonework and drool-inducing joinery? Check. Progressive, European infused provenance? Check. This last point is especially exciting for us as this home is in fact a classic project from the hand of Anatol Kagan, gentleman architect and for whom we have a special soft spot.
Enter Simon Reeves, local architectural historian and true Australian MCM soldier often the name behind many council submissions and local building surveys which result in the saving of some of our most endangered built heritage (see – one of his most recent successes in Ballarat). Reeves has just released his own book on the work and incredible life journey of Anatol Kagan which is a must read for those interested in more under-the-radar architects who made no less a contribution to Australian Modernist architecture from the 1940s -70s as some of the more well known personalities. ‘Gentle Modernist, The Nine Lives of Anatol Kagan’ can be purchased online at the publisher. A good opportunity to throw your support behind those doing the hard yards for our own Modernist landscape and just in time for Christmas – making it the perfect gift for the MCM tragic in your life.
